The east St. Louis Race Riots happened between July 1 through July 3, 1917.

"The official death toll was 39 African Americans killed and 9 whites killed, however many people believe that there were over 100 African Americans killed." (Smithsonian) and "Newspaper reporters counted 6 dead bodies lying in the street and more hanging from lampposts" (Bnd.com)
What was the cause of the riot?
The riots all started after armed African Americans shot and killed to white police officers. Then a massacre occurred with white people "hunting down" african Americans and murdering them in cold blood. "
Why were so many people beaten and killed?
What is believed to be hundreds dead is caused because the whites were looking to kill and torture African Americans as a form of "retaliation" but in reality, they just wanted to let out frustrations and go on manhunts.
Where did this happen?The events took place in and near East St. Louis, Illinois, an industrial city on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from St. Louis, Missouri.

What mainly lead to the East St. Louis Race Riots were disputes over race and labor related by whites, causing anywhere from 40-250 African American deaths and about $400,000 (8 million dollars 2017).
What events occured after the Riots?
After the riots, leaving possibly hundreds dead, the riot was simply forgot about by the world but remembered by those who endured or suffered from it. "The deeper, more insidious fact underlying this event is that, even though these horrors were vile and inhumane, this event and the lives lost have been mostly forgotten."
